Answers at your fingertips

Find quick answers to common questions about our platform, features, services, and collaborations. Whether you're working on onshore, offshore or R&D projects, find what you need fast and clearly.

1. Getting started

No, as it is a cloud-based solution.
No, the onboarding process is included in your subscription fee.
No, however we recommend using Google Chrome.
Yes, we do provide student licenses prior to a preliminary interview to get to know the content of your work and how we can support you best.
Youwind was founded in 2018 by a team of experts in wind energy that experienced real-world challenges while working in the offshore industry in Denmark.
Youwind is based in Barcelona with strong ties to Iceland beacuse of it's origins, but operating with an international team and clients around the globe.
The onboarding procedure consists of dedicated onboarding sessions for a reduced group of users where we go through a real case that is chosen by the client, to go over all functionalities of the IT solution and discuss Q&A while users are trying to do it by themselves.

2. Platform use

Yes, you will be able to use Youwind on a global scale.
Yes, you can use our IT platform from different locations, no need to have the same IP.
Many users can work on the same project, as long as you save your changes for the rest to see the updates live.
Yes, you will be able to compare different scenarios and see the main differences in the "Project Overview and Finance" section.
Yes, you will be able to download this information in different standard formats supported by Youwind.
Yes, Youwind supports both onshore and offshore wind farms. When you create a scenario of your wind farm you will be able to select if it is an onshore, offshore or a combination of both.

3. Calculations & Modelling

General

Youwind includes the state-of-the-art wake loss models such as TurbOPark, N.O. Jensen and Ainslie Eddy Viscosity model. It is also possible to perform a weighted average of these wake loss models.
For Turbopark, Ørsted has provided a comparison case on https://github.com/OrstedRD/TurbOPark/blob/main/TurbOParkExamples.pdf. For the N.O. Jensen model (NOJ), we use the implementation of PyWake, for which a validation report is provided in: https://topfarm.pages.windenergy.dtu.dk/PyWake/validation.html
Yes, in onshore wind farms the orograhpy is taken into account for the calculations.
Youwind allows the user to upload a Wind Resource Grid (.wrg) that takes into account the local effects at high resolution.
Yes, the user can create any existing or expected wind farm and store it in its' own library item. Therefore, when calculating the wake losses you will be able to select the neighbouring wind farms to be considered for the external wake losses.
Yes, the effective turbulence is set on each turbine position based on the wake model applied on top of the ambient turbulence.

Data & Sources

Youwind uses publicly available information as a data source and also back engineers some of the information based on the expertise.
Yes, you will be able to upload your information following the supported formats, and it will be stored with high standards of confidentiality.
Youwind includes relevant areas for your wind farm design that are publically available, from designated areas for wind farms to technical and environmental constraints, human activities, such as vessel density, fishing activities, existing infrastructure of cables and pipelines and other useful data for calculations, such as harbours and onshore electrical substations. Youwind also displays the depth contour and the wind map from Vortex FdC.
Yes, there is the option to upload your own GIS layers with additional environmental requirements or local constraints that you might have.
We have an API that provides GEBCO data. Should the user have other sources of bathymetry from e.g. a geophysical campaign then these values can be modified directly for each turbine positions.
Youwind supports a broad range of wind data sources and formats. Youwind includes by default the Vortex Maps with ERA5, 20 years average with 1km resolution that has been mesoscaled. Optionally, the user will be able to upload wind resource grids and timeseries.
Our IT platform includes an extensive list of preset settings. Some sources include publicly available information as well as back-engineering data based on our extensive experience in wind energy. The specific sources will be listed on our platform.
We will be pleased to do so including the level of uncertainty you will be comfortable with; in case it is useful for our client.

Support & Security

Yes, you will receive technical support during the subscription period and we will schedule regular meetings with Youwind experts.
Yes, you will be able to assign different Edit/Read permissions to the users based on their area of expertise.

R&D Projects

Yes, contact us and we will evaluate the R&D proposal internally and get back to you. At Youwind we are allways willing to collaborate to push the boundaries of the industry further, as we are currently participating in different Consortia with leading entities and universities.
