EOLOS & Youwind – When Two Forces Align to Move Wind Forward
In the Baltic Sea, where the horizon widens and the wind carries the promise of a cleaner future, the ELWIND offshore project is preparing to define the next chapter of renewable energy for Estonia and Latvia. And at the heart of its early development, two companies have joined forces with a shared belief: when expertise aligns at the right moment, even the most complex challenges begin to shift.
The collaboration between EOLOS Floating LiDAR Solutions and Youwind began in 2024 with a simple yet high-stakes question: Where should the floating LiDAR buoys be placed to capture the most representative wind conditions for ELWIND? Both teams understood that this decision would influence years of planning, from wind-resource modelling to layout design, cost projections, and ultimately the confidence of future developers.
EOLOS brought decades of offshore measurement experience, shaped through deployments in demanding seas around the world. Youwind contributed as digital platform designed specifically to transform early-stage offshore wind questions into clear, actionable insights. What emerged from their partnership was more than a technical workflow, it was a shared approach to understanding the unseen.
Seeing the Wind Before It Is Measured
The placement of floating LiDAR systems is never arbitrary. It requires interpreting layers of data: wind-flow patterns, bathymetry, environmental constraints, vessel traffic, future turbine layouts, and the subtle behaviors of the sea itself. Using Youwind’s integrated modelling environment, both companies worked side by side to explore scenarios, refine assumptions such as Turbulence Intensity (TI) variability, and identify two buoy locations that would reduce uncertainty and strengthen the measurement campaign’s long-term value. The location analysis also identified a strategic position to enable future wake-loss analytics and validation, anticipating the relevance this will gain as additional wind farms are to be developed in the area.
The outcome was not just optimal positions on a map, it was a clearer picture of ELWIND’s potential. The collaborative process allowed both teams to anticipate challenges early, align technical reasoning, and translate complex spatial considerations into decisions stakeholders could trust.
“Working with Youwind enabled us to deliver a robust and comprehensive proposal for floating LiDAR positioning. By incorporating additional variables—such as bathymetry, environmental constraints, vessel traffic, and potential future turbine layouts—that we are not typically required to analyse, the partnership significantly enhances the value we can provide to the end client”

Turning Measurements Into Meaning
Beyond buoy placement, the partnership extended into understanding turbulence intensity, wake behaviors, and the implications of various scenarios for future developers. These early insights allow authorities and stakeholders to interpret the measurement campaign not as a standalone action, but as the beginning of a long development journey. With each layer of analysis, the project gains more clarity, an essential ingredient for planning infrastructure, evaluating costs, and establishing realistic expectations.
Two Complementary Strengths in Motion
What makes the EOLOS–Youwind collaboration stand out is how naturally each company’s strengths enhance the other’s. EOLOS ensures high-quality, reliable offshore data collection, the foundation on which all future modelling rests. Youwind transforms that foundation into a digital environment where layouts, costs, constraints, and scenarios can be evaluated seamlessly.
This combination creates a shared technical language that developers, ministries, and consultants can work from, a rarity in early-stage offshore wind, where fragmentation often slows progress.
“Supporting EOLOS on the ELWIND project reflects our belief that the earliest decisions set the tone for everything that comes after. When we combine EOLOS’ precision at sea with our analytical clarity, we help the entire development move forward with more confidence.”
— Anna Rivera, CEO, Youwind
A Partnership Shaping What Comes Next
As the buoy systems are deployed and data begins to flow, new insights will play a crucial role in shaping turbine layout design, wake modelling, and long-term energy yield productions. And while the Baltic wind cannot be steered, the partnership between EOLOS and Youwind ensures it can be understood, and harnessed, with greater clarity and purpose.
Together, they are proving that when two forces meet at the right time, they don’t just measure the wind.
They move the industry forward.
