Enhancing Offshore Foundation Accuracy with Soil Type Per Location
Youwind has introduced a key platform enhancement that sharpens the precision of offshore wind farm development: seabed composition is now defined per turbine location, not uniformly across the entire development area. This granular approach directly impacts the accuracy of foundation assignments, weight estimations, and cost calculations.
More Control, More Precision
Previously, offshore foundation configurations assumed a single soil type per site. Now, developers can define the seabed composition at either the wind farm level or individual turbine level. This reflects the real-world geological variability found in offshore wind zones.
By enabling manual soil type definition at this level, Youwind empowers users to align their digital design assumptions with actual seabed surveys, reducing the risk of over- or under-engineering.
The supported soil types now include:
- Sand
- Mud and muddy sand
- Coarse grained sediment
- Mixed sediment
- Rock and boulders
This classification is consistent with offshore geotechnical standards and supports more reliable foundation feasibility analysis.
Smarter Foundation Assignment Through the Library
In the Foundation library, users can now specify which foundations are suitable for which soil types. Each foundation object includes an expanded Soil properties section where you can:
- Allow or restrict use in each soil type.
- Define a Weight margin factor (%) to adjust the calculated foundation weight based on soil properties and installation complexity.
When the “Use soil type scaling factor” is enabled in the scenario, the system applies this factor during offshore bottom-fixed foundation weight calculations—increasing precision for LCOE calculation and budgeting.

Automatic Foundation Matching + Validation
Youwind’s platform now automatically validates foundation assignments against soil compatibility. If a foundation is selected for a location where it’s not allowed (based on your settings in the Foundation library), a warning is triggered.
Additionally, each foundation cell in the turbine table includes a direct link to the Foundation library, enabling faster design iterations and checks.
This integration of soil data with foundation modelling enhances both financial modelling wind energy workflows and bankable yield assessment processes.
Final Thoughts: Small Detail, Big Impact
In offshore wind, seabed composition matters—and now, Youwind users can account for that detail with confidence and control. This update helps ensure your projects remain efficient, technically feasible, and financially robust.
