New Feature: Generate Site-Specific WRGs Directly in Youwind

We’re excited to introduce PyWAsP WRG Generation, a powerful new feature that makes wind resource assessment faster and more integrated within the Youwind platform.

Powered by PyWAsP from DTU Wind and Energy Systems, the feature enables users to generate a site-specific Wind Resource Grid (WRG) directly within the Youwind Library, removing the need to source and upload an external WRG file.

PyWAsP combines Global Wind Atlas v4 wind climate data, Copernicus DEM GLO-30 terrain elevation and ESA Land Cover data to perform WAsP microscale downscaling. The result is a high-resolution, hub-height WRG with sector-wise Weibull parameters, ready to be stored in the Library and used across any project scenario.

The added value? A faster, more streamlined workflow from initial site assessment to detailed wind farm design, with wind resource generation fully integrated into Youwind.

Youwind in Asia: Floating Wind & Hybrid Energy Optimization

In July, our CTO and co-founder Edvald Edvaldsson joined two key industry events in Asia, contributing to discussions around the next phase of renewable energy development in the region.

At the WORLD FORUM OFFSHORE WIND APAC Summit 2026 in Tokyo, Edvald took part as a speaker in a panel discussion on the path towards commercial-scale floating offshore wind. Together with experts from across the offshore wind value chain, he shared Youwind’s perspective on how digital engineering and early-stage optimization can help developers reduce uncertainty, improve decision-making and accelerate project delivery.

A few days later, at VORTEX WindSEA Bangkok 2026, Youwind showcased its latest capabilities for integrating wind, solar and battery optimization into a single workflow. Using examples from Thailand and the Philippines, the session demonstrated how developers can compare multiple generation sources, analyse battery state of charge against day-ahead prices, identify curtailed energy and optimize layouts for revenue, all directly within Youwind.

Both events provided a valuable opportunity to exchange knowledge with industry professionals across Asia-Pacific and highlight how integrated digital tools can support increasingly complex renewable energy projects.

Webinar: Optimizing Offshore Energy Hubs

In July, Youwind hosted a webinar exploring how offshore energy hubs can help address the growing complexity and cost of connecting large offshore wind projects to the grid.

Experts Mario Alejandro Useche Arteaga and Marc Cheah Mañé discussed how shared offshore infrastructure, advanced optimization and smarter energy management can improve transmission efficiency, grid flexibility and overall project bankability.

The session covered topics including grid integration, HVDC converter sizing, uncertainty-aware energy management, offshore energy hub planning and multi-objective optimization, showing how engineering analysis, GIS constraints and financial modelling can be combined to support better-informed project decisions.

The key takeaway: the future of offshore wind will depend not only on larger turbines, but also on smarter, more integrated engineering and optimization across the entire project lifecycle.

R&D in Action: From International Collaboration to Applied Research

From the very beginning, R&D has been an important part of Youwind’s DNA. We are actively involved in research projects that bring together industry, academia and international partners, and we are proud to share our knowledge with the wider wind energy community. For us, research creates the greatest value when it moves beyond theory and helps address the real challenges faced by wind farm developers.

During July and August, two important R&D events highlighted this commitment.

In July, at our Barcelona office, we welcomed Jose Luis Contreras Beramendi from CDTI Innovación to review the progress of the Spain–Korea SKILLS R&D project. The project brings together Spanish and Korean partners to develop innovative technologies for floating offshore wind, with Youwind contributing its expertise in wind farm engineering software and digital optimization. The visit provided an opportunity to review progress, discuss upcoming milestones and prepare for the next stages of this international collaboration.

In August, a new scientific paper was published as part of SUDOCO, a Horizon Europe research project focused on advanced wind farm control, with our Chief Engineer Pieter Gebraad among the contributing authors alongside researchers from TU Delft.

The study explores how different wind farm flow-control strategies, including wake steering and the helix wake mixing method, can be combined across large-scale wind farms. The results highlight the potential of multi-strategy approaches, particularly when uncertainty in wind direction is taken into account.

Both initiatives reflect what R&D means to us: connecting academic research, engineering expertise and real industry challenges to continuously improve how wind farms are designed and optimized.
