Youwind new tools and features, April 2024

April 3, 2024 by Alberto Garcia

In this article, we give an overview of the latest additions to the Youwind web-based solution:

  • Existing neighbouring wind farms added to area screening and  park layout design
  • Adaption of Air Density and multiple power curves
  • Internal and external wake loss efficiency split in scenario overview
  • Easy built-out of neighbouring wind farm scenarios
  • Updates of areascreening that show mouse coordinates and duplicate button

As always, you can write to info@youwindrenewables.com to get further information or help from our offshore wind experts.

Existing neighbouring wind farms

Under Area screening and My Layers then all the existing neighbouring wind farms, the number of positions and turbine types have been added.

This is displayed as a turbine map showing all existing turbines worldwide but also the ones Youwind users have created for their scenarios.

By seamlessly adding the neighboring wind farms from the global project directly to your scenario in Park Layout Design they are automatically included to calculate the existing wake effect with the chosen wake loss model.

Youwind new tools and features, February 2024

February 16, 2024 by Alberto Garcia

In this article, we give an overview of the latest additions to the Youwind web-based solution:

  • Exclusion zones and multiple development areas added to park layout design
  • Wind speed bias can be edited directly with inputs of Weibull parameters
  • Visualization of rotor diameter spacing and exclusion zones in park layout
  • Wind map visualization in Area Screening including bathymetry
  • Direct edit of offshore substation and turbine positions
  • Bathymetry slope visualization
  • Fixed Bottom and Floating foundation filtering on the map
  • Updated insights for offshore wind opportunities in Colombia

As always, you can write to info@youwindrenewables.com to get further information or help from our offshore wind experts.

Exclusion zones and multiple development areas
For the offshore wind farm layout it is important to ensure the right exclusion zones are accounted for. This applies to the actual positions of the turbines, but also to the array and export cables, mooring lines and anchors, and offshore substations.
The exclusion zones can be for instance UXOs, existing pipelines or cables or simply the area in which the developer should not plan for any infrastructure of offshore wind components.
This is now possible in Youwind with a very efficient feature that was recently launched. Now the users can upload an area that includes already the exclusion zones, or edit them directly on the map before generating a layout.
When there is a need to take exclusion areas into account the users can use the “Cut Layers” tool on the map.

Youwind new tools and features, January 2024

January 31, 2024 by Alberto Garcia

In this article, we give an overview of the latest additions to the Youwind web-based solution:

  • Multicompany feature to share libraries and scenarios with different companies
  • Visualization and ability to move the offshore substation
  • Export cable routing linked from offshore substation to onshore grid connection
  • Generate, visualize, and edit the array cable layout
  • The possibility of adding a shunt reactor to improve the efficiency of AC export transmission. Now both onshore and offshore
  • Updated LCOE table
  • Wind map visualization in Area Screening
  • Updated wind farm areas and GIS layers in Colombia, South Africa, and other emerging markets

As always, you can write to info@youwindrenewables.com to get further information or help from our offshore wind experts.

Multicompany feature
With the Multicompany feature, our existing users can have access to other companies than their own if the company admin has invited them to have access. This is useful for companies that have a consortium for a specific wind farm, companies that need different access for teams in different countries to keep confidentiality standards, or consultancies that have multiple clients and want to share information of the progress with existing users.
Now the users can share libraries and scenarios within different companies.
How does it work?
User from Company A invites user from Company B to get access to Company A.

Youwind new tools and features, November 2023

January 31, 2024 by Alberto Garcia

In this article, we give an overview of the latest additions to the Youwind IT Platform:

  • The possibility of adding a shunt reactor to improve the efficiency of AC export transmission
  • Ability to fix the rotation angle of the wind park layout
  • Improvements in the financial overview of your Scenario
  • Scenario workflow overview and notifications
  • Commenting and tagging
  • Share the VMS link and ESRI to the GIS folder
  • Updated wind areas in Greece and Portugal used for the public consultation process
  • Floating wind budget in 2023

As always, you can write to info@youwindrenewables.com to get further information or help from our offshore wind experts.

Extension of AC transmission modeling with a shunt reactor
When you are using an AC high-voltage transmission in your offshore wind park scenario, you can now add shunt reactors on your offshore substations.

You can do this by using the checkbox Use a shunt reactor on the offshore substation. The reactive power MVAr capacity of the shunt reactor is automatically chosen to maximize the efficiency of the export transmission. You can inspect the resulting Total shunt reactor capacity (MVAr) in the Export Cable assumptions, and the improved Export Cable Efficiency (%) in the Efficiency and Availability table.

The effect of using a shunt reactor will be more significant for AC transmissions covering a longer distance, i.e. when the wind park is further away from the onshore substation.

Youwind new tools and features, early July 2023

July 7, 2023 by Alberto Garcia

In this article, we give an overview of the latest additions to the Youwind IT Platform:

  • The possibility to take into account local soil conditions in foundation costing
  • Calculation of Export cable availability based on the length of the cables

As always, you can write to info@youwindrenewables.com to get further information or help from our offshore wind experts.

Impact of soil conditions on foundation costing

Youwind is now updated with engineering functions that adjust the weight of monopiles or jackets to local soil conditions when analyzing potential locations for fixed-bottom offshore wind turbines.

The soil conditions that can be extracted directly in the Youwind platform are categorized as follows:

  • Mud to muddy sand
  • Sand
  • Coarse-grained sediment
  • Mixed sediment
  • Rock & boulders

The available datasets that are part of this current update are the following:

  • Europe (Source: EUSeaMap – Broad-scale Seabed Habitat Map for Europe)
  • Australia (Source: Spatial Analysis of Biophysical Variables by Geoscience Australia)
  • US Pacific (Coastal and Marine Ecological Classification Standard Version 4.0 – Federal Geographic Data Committee).

More datasets that cover the rest of the world will follow in the coming weeks.

As an example, the different types of soil conditions in Portugal can be seen in the figure below.

Youwind launches neighbouring wind parks in wake calculations, June 2023

July 7, 2023 by Alberto Garcia

Development Update – June 2023

It is summer! 🔅 So fire up the barbecue and invite the neighbours!

Well, in the wind energy community, we know that having neighbours will bring some yield losses. 🌤️  This month we are adding the possibility to include neighbouring wind parks in your wake loss calculations!

It is an important topic in the accelerating development of wind energy in several areas of the world, that we handle in a user-friendly way. 🚀 In this article, we will give an overview of this latest addition to the Youwind IT Platform.

As always, you can write directly in the chat box in the app or simply write to info@youwindrenewables.com to get further information or help from our offshore wind experts.

Include neighbouring wind parks in your wake loss calculations

In the Park Layout Design tab, you will find a new tab called “Neighbouring wind parks”. Here you can add one or more neighbouring wind parks to be included in your Scenario. The wakes created by these neighbouring wind parks will be included in the wake loss calculations and you can see the effect on the Annual Energy Production of your wind park.
