This September, we introduced YAI, the Youwind AI Assistant.

YAI creates a new way for users to interact with their wind projects by making it easier to navigate and understand the engineering and financial results generated within Youwind.

The principle behind YAI is simple: YAI understands your question. Youwind performs the engineering and financial calculations.

Wake effects, yield, electrical losses, CAPEX, OPEX, LCOE, IRR, NPV and other project results can quickly become complex, particularly as projects evolve and the number of scenarios and variables increases. YAI reads these results and helps users understand the information behind them through a more intuitive conversational interaction.

Importantly, the engineering remains at the core. YAI does not replace the calculations behind a project. Instead, it provides a new interface for accessing and understanding the results produced by Youwind.

Our aim is to help engineers, developers and other wind energy professionals get closer to their project data and make it easier to extract useful information from increasingly complex analyses.

Only days after launching YAI, we had the opportunity to take it directly to the wind industry at WindEnergy Hamburg, from 22–24 September.

After spending significant time developing YAI behind the scenes, one of the most valuable parts of Hamburg was finally putting it in front of developers, engineers, consultants, clients and partners and seeing their reactions firsthand.

Across 2.5 days, we had 25 planned meetings plus several unexpected encounters, alongside dinners with partners, discussions with long-standing clients and conversations with many new contacts.

YAI became an important part of many of those discussions. Demonstrating how quickly users could ask questions about their projects and receive responses based on their Youwind results sparked conversations about how AI could fit into the day-to-day work of wind energy professionals.

But Hamburg was about much more than demonstrating a new feature.

Events like WindEnergy Hamburg remain an important opportunity for us to understand what developers and engineering teams are working on, the challenges they are encountering and how priorities across the wind sector are evolving.

The conversations are continuing beyond the event, with follow-up meetings already planned for the coming weeks.

Thank you to everyone who stopped by, met with us, asked questions or shared feedback. Your reactions and insights are particularly valuable as we continue developing YAI and the wider Youwind platform.

Meet YAI

As wind projects move from early-stage assessment towards on-site measurement campaigns and more detailed design, new wind resource information progressively becomes available.

The challenge is ensuring that this additional information translates into better wind resource models and, ultimately, better project design decisions.

On 16 September, Youwind and VORTEX hosted a joint webinar exploring how multiple calibrations of Vortex FARM can help reduce wind resource uncertainty and support more informed turbine layout decisions.

The session attracted more than 300 registrations, demonstrating the strong industry interest in workflows that allow wind resource models to evolve alongside project development.

During the webinar, Pau Casso, CTO at VORTEX, and Edvald Edvaldsson, CTO at Youwind, presented a practical workflow showing how developers can recalibrate Vortex FARM when new on-site measurements become available.

The session explored how teams can progressively refine wind resource data, integrate calibrated resource information into Youwind and apply the resulting data to layout optimisation and micrositing.

The workflow reflects an important principle in wind project development: as the quality and quantity of project data increase, the models supporting design decisions should evolve with them.

By combining calibrated wind resource information with engineering analysis and layout optimisation, developers can work towards reducing uncertainty and making better-informed decisions as their projects mature.

This month, we had the pleasure of hosting a consortium meeting for SKILLS, an R&D project in which Youwind is actively involved.

Part of a Spain-Korea public funding call, SKILLS brings together a consortium of technological entities from both countries with the goal of advancing the implementation of floating offshore wind farm technologies. The project focuses on improving system performance while helping maximize the lifetime of operational assets.

Among the project’s key objectives are the design of a floating offshore multi-wind turbine (FOMWT) system with twin 10 MW turbines, the optimization of wind farm performance through the management of wakes, loads and energy production, and the digitalization of future wind farm systems.

Bringing the consortium together in person gave us the opportunity to explore different technical topics in greater depth, discuss the progress of the project and explain Youwind’s contribution to the initiative.

But international R&D collaboration is not only about technical discussions. After the working sessions, there was also time to get to know our project partners better in a more relaxed setting. These moments are an important part of building the relationships and shared understanding behind a long-term international research collaboration.

Youwind’s participation in the project is led by Ignasi Badia Puyol, who will continue contributing to the exchange between the European and Korean wind energy sectors over the coming months.

On October 1, Ignasi will host a Youwind webinar together with our client OWC, focused on best practices for offshore wind farm design in Korea. In November, he will also travel to Korea, where his agenda will include attending the Asia-Pacific Forum on Renewable Energy in Jeju, Republic of Korea.

Together, these activities reflect an important part of our approach to R&D: combining research, engineering expertise and international collaboration, while ensuring that the knowledge generated through these projects remains connected to the real challenges facing the wind industry.
